Spring is a magical time along the Oregon Coast, as nature awakens from its winter slumber, and the coastal landscape bursts into vibrant colors. From blooming wildflowers to migrating whales, the Oregon Coast offers a plethora of activities for visitors seeking a refreshing spring getaway. In this article, we’ll explore the top things to do along the Oregon Coast during the spring season, ensuring a memorable and rejuvenating experience.

Amazing Things to Do in Spring at the Oregon Coast

Whale Watching

Spring is the ideal time for whale watching along the Oregon Coast, as gray whales make their annual migration from the warm waters of Baja California to the nutrient-rich feeding grounds of the Arctic. Numerous designated viewpoints, such as Depoe Bay and Cape Perpetua, offer excellent vantage points for spotting these majestic creatures as they breach and spout. Be sure and stop at  Depoe Bay’s Whale Watching Center.

Hunt for Glass Floats

Glass floats in Lincoln City, Oregon, are part of a unique and popular treasure hunt known as the “Finders Keepers” program. This program involves the distribution of handcrafted glass floats along the city’s seven miles of pristine beaches. The tradition started in 1997 as a way to attract visitors during the quieter winter months and has since become a beloved annual event. From mid-October to Memorial Day (usually from mid-October to late May), the floats are strategically placed along the beaches of Lincoln City. They are usually placed above the high tide line and below the beach embankment, then visitors and locals alike are invited to search for these glass treasures. The floats are hidden, waiting to be discovered by beachcombers.

Wildflower Hikes

The coastal landscape comes alive with a riot of colors as wildflowers bloom in spring. Consider taking a hike along one of the many scenic trails, such as the Cape Falcon Trail or the Cascade Head Trail. These hikes not only provide breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean but also showcase the diverse array of wildflowers carpeting the forest floor.

Beachcombing and Tidepooling

Spring brings lower tides, creating perfect conditions for beachcombing and tidepooling. Explore the tide pools at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach or Yaquina Head in Newport to discover a fascinating world of marine life, including anemones, starfish, and sea urchins. Keep an eye out for colorful seashells and other treasures washed ashore.

Take a Waterfall Hike

There are quite a few awesome waterfall hikes near the Oregon coast. One of my favorites is Drift Creek Falls which is about 15 miles east of Lincoln City.

Festivals and Events

Spring is festival season along the Oregon Coast, with a variety of events celebrating art, culture, and the coastal way of life. The Astoria Warrenton Crab, Seafood & Wine Festival and the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival are two notable events that showcase the region’s culinary delights, including fresh seafood and local wines.

Lighthouse Exploration

The Oregon Coast is dotted with iconic lighthouses that add to its charm. Spring offers an excellent time to explore these historic structures, such as the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Heceta Head Lighthouse, and Cape Meares Lighthouse. Many lighthouses offer guided tours and stunning panoramic views of the coastline.

Culinary Adventures

Indulge your taste buds with the bounty of the Oregon Coast during spring. Visit local farmers’ markets to savor fresh, seasonal produce and artisanal products. Coastal towns boast a diverse culinary scene, with seafood restaurants offering the catch of the day and charming cafes serving up locally roasted coffee.

Photography Opportunities

Spring provides photographers with ample opportunities to capture the beauty of the Oregon Coast. From dramatic seascapes and colorful sunsets to blooming landscapes and wildlife, the coastal region offers a wealth of subjects. Don’t forget to bring your camera and capture memories that will last a lifetime.

Enjoy a Local Brew at The Beach

Check out the Pelican Brewery in Pacific City or the many other breweries along the coastline. Local brews combined with the beautiful views of the Pacific is a wonderful way to experience the Pacific Northwest.

See the Spectacular Thor’s Well

If you haven’t yet visited Thor’s Well, you need to make a trip there ASAP! It is quite a stunning natural phenomenon.

Visit The Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is open year round and it’s great to visit any time of year. Spring is a perfect time to visit the aquarium, however, be prepared for the spring break crowds.
