Inexpensive Family Christmas Activities at Home
A crackling fire can add warmth and a character to your home on a snowy, winter night. It’s an opportunity for the whole family to gather around the fireplace and experience the glow of the freshly lit fire while sharing some time together away from the hubbub and confusion of outside life.
With everyone gathered around the warm glow of the fire, you’re going to need some family entertainment.
Here are some family Christmas activities to keep your family entertained:
Tell Ghost Stories
With a freshly lit fire and a dimly lit room, this is the perfect setting for the family to gather around the fireplace and tell ghost stories. Let everyone take turns telling their ghost story and then vote on the best one.
Bake Christmas Cookies
Christmas cookies and treats are always fun to make, but it is much more fun to make them as a family!
Share Memories
Why not bring out your old photo albums and scrapbooks while everyone is gathered around the fireplace? There’s nothing more entertaining than looking at old photographs and sharing forgotten memories. This activity can help to bring you closer together as a family.
Play Some Old-Fashioned Card Games
There are a multitude of fun card games to play around the fireplace. How about a game of gin rummy, blackjack, or crazy eights? These old fashioned card games can be a welcome break from computer games and is an activity that can be fun for young and old alike.
Play Some Board Games
Why not bring out the board games for the whole family to enjoy? It’s probably been a long time since your family has played a spirited game of Monopoly or Clue. If skill games are more your style, bring out the Scrabble board or engage the family in a friendly game of Trivial Pursuit. It’ll be an evening to remember.
Take a Different Kind of Christmas Family Photo
Christmas cards which include a family photo always add a personal touch to your holiday greeting. Instead of getting a professional portrait or taking the usual group picture at home, enlist your family to come up with ideas for an unusual family Christmas photo.
Buy and Decorate your Christmas Tree Together
Some of my best childhood memories are going as a family to pick out a Christmas tree, then bringing it home and decorating it together. Make some popcorn and cookies and serve eggnog or hot chocolate. This is a great time to share your Christmas memories and stories with your children.
Watch a Favorite Holiday Special or Movie Together
There are so many holiday movies and specials, it’s impossible to watch them all. Pick one or two and watch them as a family. Remember that tastes change over time, and the specials you loved as a child may not appeal to your children. Choose something that everyone will enjoy.
Make Future Plans as a Family
As you gather around, plan your next vacation when the weather turns warm again. Let each family member give his or her vision of where they’d like to go and what they’d like to do. Write down your ideas and you’ll have your summer vacation planned out well ahead of time. Plus, you’ll each have a chance to share your idea of a dream vacation.
Spending time together as a family is the best way to celebrate Christmas. I hope these family Christmas activity ideas will help you plan some family time which will create Christmas memories for years to come.
